Hybrid Coco Container AB #21 Wax & CDN Wicks
I'm currently testing CDN wicks with Coco Hybrid #21 Luxury Wax by Accu-Blend. I'm hoping that this will be helpful to some when narrowing down which wicks to use. Feel free to adjust based on your wax/vessel/fragrance oil combo. I'm using a vessel (Libbey Heavy Rocks Base) that's 3-1/8" inner diameter at the top, so if yours is smaller, you will want to wick down. I'm also testing a few other vessels that we carry. Those are listed below. It's best to test a couple wick sizes in a few wick series or brands to see what you like the best! Feel free to reach out to me anytime if you have any questions at all. I'm here to help.
About CDN wicks...
The CDN series features a flat braided cotton wick with a special paper filament to promote maximum and consistent capillary action while ensuring a wick trimming flame posture. The difference between CDN wicks and CD wicks is a subtle but vital one. The CDN / Stabilo KST curls less while the CD / Stabilo curls more. Overall, they tend to burn cooler then the CD wicks in most waxes. CDN wicks will curl at approximately a 30-degree angle. The CD wicks curl to a 90-degree angle. The lesser angle or curl of the CDN wick will result in a smaller melt pool or base.
I'm using a 3-1/8" jar and the wicks I'm using are CDN 5, 6, 7, and 8. The others are listed below. I'm using between and 8-9% fragrance load. I will allow it to cure for 2 weeks before testing them. I will keep you updated! The other items I used when testing are the bowtie wick centering bars, and our candle wick trimmers.
If you've found a combination that works for you, please feel free to share your results below.
Results
Vessel Size | Wicks | Results |
Libbey HRB | CDN 5 | I've been testing burning for a bit now and I'm almost finished. There's some soot starting to form along the rim of the vessel. |
Libbey HRB | CDN 6 | Decent, although there's some soot starting to form along the rim. I will keep an eye on it until the end. Actually the Cdn 6 and 7 ended up being the best. Could lower FO % to 8 and retest. |
Libbey HRB | CDN 7 | Both the Cdn 7 and 8 are looking good so far. |
Libbey HRB | CDN 8 | Both the Cdn 7 and 8 are looking good so far. Will keep an eye on it until the end. The Cdn 8 definitely burned hotter in the end. |
Haven Ceramic Tumbler | CDN 7 | I'm keeping an eye on this one. Might need to bump up to Cdn 10 or double wick. The ceramic is a good insulator and the sides don't get as hot as glass. |
Haven Ceramic Tumbler | CDN 8 | I'm keeping an eye on this one. Might need to bump up to Cdn 10 or double wick. The ceramic is a good insulator and the sides don't get as hot as glass. |
3-Wick Ceramic | CDN 2 x 3 | This vessel does better with double wicking. It got a bit hot to the touch. |
3-Wick Ceramic | CDN 4 x 2 | This performed well, but I poured a tester for double Cdn 3 to compare the two. |
3-Wick Ceramic | CDN 3 x 2 | I tested this one and there was definitely more hangup on the sides. I like the double Cdn 4 better. |
Heirloom Tumbler | CDN 8 | I'm keeping an eye on this one. Might need to bump up to Cdn 10 or double wick. The ceramic is a good insulator and the sides don't get as hot as glass. This one ended up being decent, but I want to test both Cdn 8 and double Cdn 2 because there was still a bit of wax left on the bottom. |
Heirloom Tumbler | CDN 2 x 2 | Curing |
